Erm...

You absolutely must remove the rear end. Once you do this the car
will not roll. This is why trans shops will charge a premium, the
@#%)!! car will take up one of their lift bays until the trans is
back in.

Other than that, if you do this on a flat level driveway (etc)
it's not hard.

Disconnect all the junk on the rear axle. Admit defeat now, and go
buy a new rear brake hose, that goes from the body to the axle.
You won't get the old one off in one piece, I promise. In fact,
you might not be able to get the nut from the steel line off
without damage, so simply cut the rubber hose, stick a golf tee in
the end, apply lots of penetrant to the brake line fitting, and
let it soak while the trans is out!

Leave the wheels on. Remove the shocks. Cut the old brake hose.
Jack the car up high, springs will fall out. Take off panhard,
parking brake cable at the adjuster. Take off six? bolts at the
trunnion end (trans end).

Roll the rear out the back of the car! The yoke at the front of
the driveshaft will come off. You might have to get under and kick
on the axle tubes (towards the rear of the car) to free it.
There's a big ugly rubber trunnion joint in the front of the
housing/rear of trans, be nice to that nasty thing, as far as I
know they are not available. YOu can re-use the old one, if it's
distorted, rotate 180 degrees, you get to wear it out twice.

Juice will leak out the tail of the trans, probably.

After that, it's a regular trans removal.

Putting it back in isn't that bad, I forget how I got the yoke
splines to line up, probably trans in neutral, and some medium
swearing.

At least the rear rolls on it's own wheels!
