The 196 is a bit heavier than a 199/232/258 -- at least the mid 1980+ 258. remember, they shaved about 40 pounds off the engine weight that year. The 4.0L is comparable to the mid 80+ 258, might weigh a little more due to slightly heavier crank and block, but then the tubular exhaust is lighter than the cast iron used on the 258, so I'd think any weight gain would be no more than 15-20 pounds over the late 258. A 196 can be bored 0.125" over, at least pre 63 blocks can. 63-65 the blocks may have been cast a bit thinner, though I have heard of one being bored 0.080" over safely. I know a 1963 196 bare block weighs as much as an early 70s Ford 302 block -- had to remove the 302 block from an engine stand to put my 196 on once! I think the 196 was a bit heavier, but may have just been harder to handle because of length. That was about 10-12 years ago now.
