Here's the skinny, I just bought one of the original 19, 3 speed, 2 bbl
SC/360's (only five of the originals whereabouts are known). The car came
minus engine and transmission. I had an extra 71 360, 2 bbl engine but
now I am searching for the correct transmission. Unfortunately, I don't
know exactly what I am looking for. Three speed transmissions are foreign
to me so here are my questions. Did AMC use the same 3 speed behind a 6
cyl as it did the V-8's (360 too?). What would be the correct 3 speed for
a 71? Did they change over the years like they did with automatics or
were they like 4 speeds and only made minor modifications throughout the
years? I would like to restore this rare car but I am not completely
against a few minor deviations in originality.
You Rat!
I've been looking for a three speed SC/360 for a long time.
Anyway, the correct tranny would be the Borg-Warner T-15, which is a heavy
duty all syncro tranny. They were used by AMC behind 304 & 360 engines
from about 1968 thru about 1974. The trannys can be identified by an
8-bolt top cover.
I have a T-15 that came out of a 1970 Javelin. Tranny comes complete with
AMC 3-speed floor shifter from the same car (which I presume would be the
correct shifter for your application, as well.
If you are interested, contact me off the the list.
