Edelbrock heat shield

The heat shield is necessary to prevent oil from being heated by the exhaust crossover under the carb.

The heat shield also contains a baffle to prevent oil from being sucked up the PCV valve into the carb.

I've always been able to remove the rivits holding the heat shield onto the old manifold by carefully tapping a chisel under the shield near the rivit. once the rivit has thus been pulled out a little, a good pair of vice grips will pull the rivit the rest of the way out.

Or, as someone else said, just chisel the heads off and reinstall with pop rivits or sheet metal screws.
