Gwen, I have some info on the early 60's rotary in the book I wrtoe some years back. Unfortunately I won't have access to my literature (even the stuff I had in Korea!) for about a month. If anyone has a copy they can scan and send Gwen the pages on the "Rambler/Renault" rotary. In a nutshell, AMC had a license from Curtiss-Wright (who had North American distribution/licensing rights to the Wankel) to build rotary engines. They worked in partnership with Renault to develop a four or five chamber roatary that used regualr type valves. This made the engine larger in diameter than the three rotor port type (instead of normal valves there are holes in the side of the chamber similar to a two stroke), but also improved efficiency. Of course it never made it into production. This is one of the early Renault connections, the first being distribution of Classics in Europe beginning in 61 or 62 (not sure if they were assembled overseas, think they were fully assembled) and assembly i! n Belgium in 63.
