A: The 200R4 I had in my wagon was overdrive and not the 3 speed auto. I was very annoyed when it dumped on me during a trip to BC. I had to wait 3 hours for a tow truck and decided then and there to sell it for the first $100 I could get! (previous owner had it rebuilt and then replaced by Chev twice before giving up on it) It could be because it was only built to stand up to a 229 V6. The one in the '85 S10 with fuel injected 2.5L is suffering a similar fate, but seems to be holding in gear now that I added a can of STP oil treatment. (good enough for a town cruiser. Not mine!) As for an AW4 2WD, I posted on the Comanche list and may have a couple leads for you (they want to convert to 4x4 like I did and complain they can't find 4x4 trans for reasonable prices) From: "Jeff Reeves" <jeffr@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: {FORGED?} Re: Humpster I6 trans Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2005 08:46:05 -0500 Message-Id: <200503030846786.SM01228@D4JF0F51> Jim: The 200-4R transmission isn't the same one as the crappy ole TH-200 used in the GM A/G bodies of the late 70s/early 80s. It does share the unfortunate "200" name, but it's only that in name. The 200-4R is actually a pretty durable little tranny. The Buick Grand Nationals and GNXs used a slightly beefed up version of this unit, and they're known to tolerate a reasonable amount of abuse. This trans was also used up through about 1990 in a lot of the large GM B-bodies, i.e. Buick Estate Wagons and Olds Custom Cruisers and Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham--essentially any of the RWD cars that DIDN'T have a Chevy engine. Now, those "Metric" TH-200s used in the late 70s WERE a buncha junk, but that's another whole topic. AMC content--I'm still leaning toward a 2WD AW4 for my Spirit 4.0 project.
