I can't say for sure, however in '75 AMC had problems with their electronic ignition systems and recalled them. I distinctly remember my '75 Gremlin doing the exact same thing. I don't know the entire process, however I believe it was simply the case of splicing and removing the transistor?between the distributor cap and coil.
