Timing chain might have skipped. Try removing the plugs (to eliminate compression resistance) and gently rocking the crank back and forth by the bolt on the harmonic balancer. Is there slack? Would be easier to see with the valve cover off (again). If the crank moves appreciably before the camshaft, the chain could be loose enough to skip teeth.
