I'm with you 100% for once Randy! ;> If you move to France, you better learn to speak and read French! Same ting over here in Korea. If you want to get out away from the bases or popular tourist sites, you need to learn some Hangul (no, there's no such ting as "Korean" language wise). Being English speaking natively we do have an advantage though. The British had colonies all over the world, so much so that English is the international business language. The US also has a lot of bases around the world. Anyone who does much business with them and the GIs around them learns at least enough English to sell! So there's a good hint if any of you do any foreign travel: go to a country/city that has a US military base nearby. It won't be any more secure, but there will be people around more willing to tolerate US presence for the most part. To many in the area mkae their livelyhood off GI customers and doing busines with the base. Doesn't mean there won't be those around who wish you'd go home, just a few more friendl! y places. Korea is one place that is to often overlooked. It's a great place for an American to visit! Prices are slightly lower than the US, and the people are generally friendly and glad you're over here! Like all places this isn't the case all the time and from everyone, but it is the general climate. You're not likely to run into trouble as long as you make an effort to be polite. The people here will be the same toward you. We more or less got ran out of a club (well, wouldn't let a group of us in) once in an area not frequented by foreign visitors. It wasn't that they didn't want us in, but that no one spoke English and they didn't want to be put in an embarrassing position. A couple of the guys got a little miffed because they wouldn't let us in, but I explained the language barrier problem and they saw things differently. The "bouncers" (well, door men?) were very polite in their efforts to convey that they didn't really want us there. Another club a couple building! s over had a bartender who spoke just enough English. They let us in a nd ushered us over to her area. The Koreans accomodated us when they could! Okay, enough off topic stuff for me for about a month now!! ;> On January 5, 2005 Randy Guynn wrote: > Hate to see you go away from the list because of a language barrier. > However I want to applaud your recognizing that without knowing English > you were not gaining much.
