The "kick-down cable" on the Borg Warner transmissions isn't just a kick-down. It's technically a THROTTLE VALVE cable. Not only does it kick the trans down, it controls pressure inside the trans. As speeds go up the trans needs more pressure to hold the bands and clutches. At lower speeds such pressure isn't needed. Without the cabel the trans will burn up. If the cable were pushed in up to the point it isn't kicking down but is allowing high pressure the trans will shift very hard and possibly crack the case (I had that happen with an aluminum case model!). Pressure needs to go down for shifting, up for holding in gear. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) *Elite* publication for those interested in all aspects of AMC history, performance, restoration, etc .
