I tied them on the 2wd Spirit. They went onto the Spirit rear axle (fit the Eagle axle I swapped in perfectly) but hit the tie rods in front. When I completed the conversion the XJ wheels worked fine.

i'm surprised.  i'd've thought the eagle hubs etc. would've given
proper clearance for jeep wheels, since afaik they shared the same
15x6 rims as early xjs and yjs.
 
the rear axle - did you use the original, or an eagle or xj one?  i
forget.
