Re: [AMC-list] A little activity on the list

I replaced all the foam and such years ago when I rebuilt the whole car. I did check it and the door flaps, all is good. The parts store actually had a listing for the factory replacement motor, which I'm sure is a universal part, so I'm going to try it. Will be awful disappointed if it doesn't blow out noticeably more air, but all the newer model stuff has a lot bigger blower wheel -- mine is 5" and most newer cars have 5.7" to 6" wheels. Not only that, they mount on the shaft differently. I had to cut the back out of the fan duct and replace it with an aluminum panel when I replaced the original fan motor. The housing had warped a bit and the fan cage was hitting the firewall. All the newer fans have a large flange made onto the motor so the motor and fan wheel pull out as a unit instead of having to take the housing off. I was going to cut it out for a newer fan, but since they are all so much bigger...

I've seen more than one heater core covered by the foam padding off the
flapper/door. Old glue doesn't hold and the foam will come off and cover the
core instead.

I'm replacing the heat/AC blower motor. Got the AC fixed and figured out
it gets cold, but doesn't move enough air. I was thinking the problem
was just not a high enough rpm motor, but now that I have it out I find
it's a bit stiff. Another universal GM type motor might be all I need,
but I'm looking for one I KNOW blows hard anyway. May have to mod the
heater housing for it to fit.
