You can do the valve seals for little cost, and it should stop the smoking, but as Thomas said, don't wait too long or you'll be pulling the oil pan and rebuilding. I had a 383 in my '69 Road Runner that did the same thing as what Thomas is talking about. The valve seals harden and break up into small pieces. I had one end up in my oil pump and shear off the drive shaft starving the engine of oil. Not a sound I'll ever forget as the bearings seized up driving down the road. Did a full rebuild myself, first engine and haven't looked back. That was 35 years ago, damn I loved that car, wish I still had it. The basic things for rebuilding an engine are the same no matter what make, just take your time and do it right. I'm waiting for spring and warm weather so I can start putting my Javelin back together. Had the body completely redone and painted last year now to the details and nickel and dime stuff that'll drain the account. The Big Bad Orange really looks sweet thoug h and he has the undercarriage looking just as good at the top. Good luck with your engine.Dan Whitehead >Do the valve seals! The 66k-mile 383 in my '68 Fury smoked the same: on start-up, but also downhill deceleration. I replaced the valve seals, but too late. Many little bits had already fallen off, migrated down, & choked up oil pickup in >oil pan. Bearing spun when my brother had the car. Block too damaged to use by the time it got back to me. Do the valve seals! >Thomas DeBusk -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
