Re: [AMC-list] Actvity on the list

Thanks for asking Joe. I also noticed it was slow. When I got two emails in one day I figured something was going on.
This weekend I am finally getting around to rebuilding my small block that busted the block a couple winters ago. Interesting someone mentioned the valve seals - Disassembled the first head today and seals were shot, back of valves bad. I also made a valve-train organization tray made of wood and dowels. New ones are $40 and I figured that could buy me new seals.
Have a good weekend.

The Amc list is kinda quiet these days.  I lurk and post on the AMC Forum and watch the Facebook page but I miss the intelligent banter here on the list too and I don't hear much from some of my favorite gurus any more.

I'll be working on my 76 Gremlin this weekend and welding a new gas pedal base onto the floor of my 62 Classic wagon.   The Gremlin has been out of the paint shop and stored inside for over four years so I guess the base coat clear coat paint is ready to color sand and buff.   Actually way past ready.  I have a new carpet and recovered seats for it.  I have a fresh 232 and was going to put a t-150 with Laycock overdrive in it but I discovered that it already has a 2.73 rear end so an overdrive would not be practical I think.  If I could finda a 3.08 AMC 15 rear or the next lower ratio I might reconsider the overdrive.  But for now I'll keep it simple and reinstall the T-14.

What will you fellow listers be doing this weekend (bad keyboard, no question mark).

Hi Joe, good to read about your ramblings again.  Why did you decide on a
232 for the Gremlin?  Or is that one you happened to have hanging around?

Not doing anything AMC related this weekend, although I really should think
about bringing Vivo down to the tire repair shop to take care of the slow
leak in my rear tire.  It's becoming a real pain in the dupa to drag my
compressor down the driveway to air it back up.

Drove her to the office on Thursday and at the end of the day had a note on
my windshield from a Janelle who wanted to buy her.  I think I'll hold onto
her for a while tho.

Ross,

Yes Gremlins are chick magnets.  We all know that.  My 76 Gremlin had a 232 from the factory and I had the block machined and bored 0.030 oversize, bought all the other new parts, but did not put it back together before I found a factory rebuilt short block in Los Angeles that I thought was a 258.  I drove to LA and bought it only to find out that it was another 232 so I decided to go ahead and use it.

Good to hear from you.

Joe

What a drag about your LA visit for an engine that was misrepresented.  Oh
well, that's how the ole AMC ball bounces I guess.

Question for you or the list, if I ever win the Lotto and have some extra
cash, and wanted to have my tired 304 overhauled, what kind of costs would I
be looking at?  Currently it doesn't smoke when driving but does smoke
considerably at start up.  I was told new valve seals would remedy that.  Is
it worth the effort to rebuild it?  Of course I have no skills so I'd have
to find a knowledgeable shop or person to do it.

Ross

Do the valve seals! The 66k-mile 383 in my '68 Fury smoked the same: on start-up, but also downhill deceleration. I replaced the valve seals, but too late. Many little bits had already fallen off, migrated down, & choked up oil pickup in oil pan. Bearing spun when my brother had the car. Block too damaged to use by the time it got back to me. Do the valve seals!
