AMC's "1975 Car Service Highlights" booklet (Pub A751001A), which was part of an annual series for mechanics to let them know the major changes from the prior year, says that the new accessory arrangement lowered the engine profile by three inches. (p 30) Since Pacer was not yet introduced when this publication was released, no mention of it appears, and it isn't immediately obvious as to why the lower profile was necessary. The water pump was also redesigned for 1975. (p 32) The new accessory arrangement, while necessary for Pacer, was used on all 1975-up AMC cars.

I had hell of a time finding a Pacer six years ago for my custom woodie wagon, I could get regular old 232 and 258 at pick a parts for $89 whole engine, but none of them would fit as the motor mounts were totally different for Pacer. So had to find a Pacer to cannibalize for drivetrain. A 258 is a 258 and 232 is 232 until it is in a Pacer, they sat in at odd angle, was not motor mounts, was the actual block mounting was different.
