I totally forgot that since it's a 904 and between '84 - '86 XJ or '86 MJ (first year of production) that NP229 was also an option with 3 speed auto, especially with the V6. It should have the "window" in the top for the CPS so a Renix 2.5L could go in (MUCH perkier than the turd point h8) The torque converter is different for the TBI 2.5 than V6 or carbed 2.5L and so is the flexplate (it has the tone ring used with 4 cyl 904s till '90) I still have one of those TBI 4 cyl flexplates around someplace. Bell pattern is NOT the same as SBC. That pattern was used on 229s and 4.3L as well as Chev inline 6 cyls and pre '80 GM 4 cyls (commonly used in boat form) CJ 4 cyls were SBC patterned, but YJ were not (as they were AMC 2.5s) AFAIK, the AMC 4 cyl wasn't used in CJs, but I'm not a short wheel base (SWB) Jeep specialist. (of the nearly 50 Jeeps I have owned, NONE have been CJs. Closest was a DJ, but I have scouted a few for interchangeable parts) The rear axle MAY be a rare-ish Model 20 with factory 1 piece axle shafts (used '84 to early '87 with heavy tow package only XJ/MJ) I wanted one for a long time for my '87, but I STILL haven't killed the D35 with 3.73 gears I put in when I did an SOA on the rear. I would do an '87 to '90 or maybe '91 HO swap in. You'd need a special Speed sensor with pass thru for the speedo cable after that. ('91 YJ 4.0L sensor is correct) Too bad you aren't closer to Seattle. I have my '87 MJ with shortbox for sale.
