That's the small Chevy V-6/four pattern transmission. 2.8 V-6 is correct, not really much better than the AMC 2.5L four. In fact, I'd rather have the multi-port version of the four than the 2.8 V-6! Trans will be a TF998 or TF999, not a GM. The AMC 2.5L four was cast with the same bell pattern and used the same trans. The 4.0L might not fit. The 87+ models have about an inch or so recess in the firewall to accommodate the 4.0L. A late 86 model MIGHT have it. You'd have to look at a 4.0L Cherokee or Comanche to see what I mean. Because of the trans pattern you'd have to change the engine/trans/t-case/drive shafts. Still used D35 axles though. ------------- Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2011 16:42:09 -0800 (PST) From: d stohler<das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> ok, i just talked to a guy tonight about an 86 camanche. its real strait and clean, inside and out. has the stupid v6/auto. i think he said 2.8 v6. what tranny would it have in it for auto? the kid said at first that it had a broken con rod. then he said he didnt know anything about cars. no hole in the oil pan/block. no battery, and to much mud/snow to drive back to try to jump it. dont know if it will turn over or not. if that v6 is toast, how hard is it to swap in a 4.0? im guessing it being a chevy motor, it would have the sbc bolt patern on the bell. so i probably need to find the engine/trans/t-case out of a cherokee? -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://www.amc-mag.com (free download available!) _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
