As mentioned, it's a baby 904 (which is pretty weak) with probably a 23 spline np207 (matching in weakness, but cheap to replace and an NP208 from an '80 to '88 FSJ (one of the options. I have at least 1 in my spare parts pile, but they don't blow up like 207s or 229s unless run out of oil) I was going to use the 904 from the postal jeep I had with Audi 2.0L and the 4x4 parts from an XJ trans to put a 5 cyl (or is it 6?) VW diesel motor in. Too many projects said no go though. Although I have someone who wants the Eagle wagon I'm putting a 727/NP229 in and has a Toy 2LT diesel with 5 speed (truck fell apart from rust) for part trade that's tempting (I have an '86 MJ longbox, which was the only size available that year, and it's 2.8 is long gone!)
