Actually, I have found one very good re-purpose for STP. It has saved more slipping automatic transmissions than you can shake a stick at. It was an old used car lot trick I got from one of the shop mechanics years ago. I have used it to salvage and revive auto trans near death's door for years. Including the one in my '73 J4000 that refused to shift into gear after alternately revving and idling for 20 minutes. I poured it in and sat back to watch that sickly sweet looking syrup make it's way down the fill tube of the nailhead TH400. After about 5 minutes I heard noise that sounded like it was trying to engage but I didn't give it gas till all the syrup was down the tube. I drove it for 3 years after that (it dumped all it's contents at least twice during that time when the cooling lines were broken. I'd have to add another can with the fresh oil to continue the engagement) In my '83 Cherokee and '84 J10 I noticed a few MPG more on highway trips as well. I think the increased viscosity cut down the slip loss inside the converters. There are special cases (break in, cleaning, etc) but in general, no modern oil lacks anything needed for the job. THe zinc/ZDDP thing with modern oils vs. flat tappet engines is a special case (but normal to us). I'm not saying you can't use one to "patch up" a problem, like a noisy trans, but doing so isn't because of a deficiency in the oil. STP was the biggest scam ever. It didn't really do anything (did no harm I guess). Lubricants developed in the last 20 years are spectacularly good. _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go.
