Re: [AMC-list] overdrive issues

If the race of the bearing is spinning in the case THAT is bad news. The good news is there is a "bearing setting" compound you can use that will solve that. It's similar to loc-tite, and made by the same company (Loc-Tite Bearing Set?). The hard red loc-tite can be used if it's just barely loose. The rear end gears will howl if they get burned from low oil, but it's common to have a bit of play in the gears. I'd be willing to bet you have an outer axle bearing going bad rather than gears. Possibly an inner bearing in the diff, but the outer's carry all the weight and generally go first. I don't think I've ever replaced a bad inner bearing, just replaced a couple when rebuilding a diff just to make sure.

ok, one more round. i got the transmission out. im pretty sure i have the
problem found. my input bearing race is very sloppy in the case. so slopy,
it wobbles the input shaft around, and will spin in the case. bearing is not
rough, or tight or anything. feels good, just very loose in the case. for
some strange reason. spinning it by hand, i can tip the shaft around, and
feel it start vibrating on the cluster gears. so, now i guess, can i run my
used input shaft/gear from the original trans in this one? i know rear end
gears are bad juju to mix together. what about trans input shaft gears? or am
i better off just swapping the bearing? ideal would be to get a new bearing,
but right now, things are tight and i cant afford to just run to town and
order one and all.
