I hate to be a party pooper, but it's not really practical to mix'n'match parts this old to make good ones. 10, 20 years ago, you could generally pull a trans (rear end, cyl head, whatever) from a junkyard, check it out, and reasonably expect to find a good one that would last a decent interval. But this stull is all solidly into ANTIQUE territory now. It's happened slowly, so it snuck up on us and we didn't notice all at once. Now I find myself HAPPY when I find a rusted ruined core. Crap I would have thrown out 15 years ago I clean, inspect, media blast, repair, stack and catalog. Some assemblies, like rear ends, were so grossly overbuilt to begin with that they DO last 30, 40 years, but that's not true for engines, alternators, steering gear, wheels, brake parts, seats, radios, anything really. The T-96 wasn't adequate when it was new, and the only used ones I've seen that were even barely usable were all from cars that had sat for a decade or more. The T-96 transmission is the single worst assembly AMC ever used in it's existence that I can think of. Worst COMMON part at least, besides problematic stuff like E-stick, etc. I really need to make an effort to ditch mine. It really holds the car back. When I was a kid my father had a couple of 20's and 30's Fords. They seemed really old to me! Well guess what -- my 60's Ramblers are EXACTLY THE SAME AS THAT today. His fords were 40 years old, and now so are my Ramblers. Young people look at them and have NO IDEA! how to drive it. Seriously. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
