I'm not so sure you understand the adapting needed. These aren't exactly "aftermarket" units. All the electric OD units were made by Borg-Warner. But they were custom made for each manufacturer, or rather each transmission. The OD unit itself is the same no matter what it's mounted on. Each transmission has a special adapter that's about 1" thick and also houses the plunger and engagement solenoid. The adapter you might be able to modify, but you also need a new output shaft for the transmission that is short and matches the internal splines on the OD input. I have seen one of these modified for divorced mount -- it doesn't attach to the transmission, but has a slip joint between the regular trans output and OD input. That required a special cover plate for the OD unit with a bearing on the input shaft, which was made by removing the output from the donor transmission. The later model (73-75?) OD unit is a hydraulically activated Laycock-DeNormanville piece. It also uses a special adapter and trans output shaft. Interestingly, the Gear Vendors OD unit is based on the L-D unit. GV bought the remaining AMC stock and converted them to other trannys (including a divorce mount) by manufacturing the adapters/covers/shafts needed. they later got a license to manufacture then and beefed up the unit, resulting in what they now make. ------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2009 09:10:11 -0600 From: "Eddie Stakes" <eddiestakes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> The folks below have a overdrive question and are also looking for a overdrive unit for a conversion. I thought I would toss their request out here to see if any replies or help, so if you can help them with either, please feel free to reply, and also copy your reply to them; and thanks in advance to all who might, and Happy New Year, Eddie Stakes 713.464.8825 eddiestakes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.planethoustonamx.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Brian Schmid mtflyr@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: overdrive I am looking for an overdrive unit for any, but, would prefer American from the early 60's through (?). It would be the smaller unit that bolts to the tail shaft and from what my research has indicated, was an after-market option. I will be adapting it to a Metropolitan. Thanks, Brian PS. I am fully aware of the engineering that may have to be done... -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
