Mark, Everything I have says the NWC T5 also takes ATF. My AMC Chilton's manual says Dexron II. I just checked the TREMEC service manual, and it also specifies Dexron II. I've talked to my local transmission shop and they said ATF. Anyone have an 83 TSM or owner's manual? I'd to really see this settled one way or the other. I have no issue with what you choose to put in your transmission, but for me knowing what the factory specified is an important part of making that choice.
