L is a hold in low or first gear, except I believe if you go fast enough the governor will force a shift to second.
1 is the equivelant of drive in modern cars, shift is 1-2-3.
2 is a start in 2 shift to 3, usefull on level or downhill starts. [Equivilant toi
D is just there to tell you that the normal drive position is either the D1 or D2 position.
D1 should give you the best all around driveablility in hill areas.
