While a longer shank would be nice, it's not really necessary. The drum will center on the hub with the studs just like the rear drums do. They will be just loose enough to pull the drum without removing the hub. Can't see a thing wrong with that! The factory makes sure they are firmly held to the hub to make it easier for production line workers to assemble.

I picked up replacement wheel studs at my friendly local automotive
parts supply shop. Brought 'em to the machine shop. The shanks are
just right for the hub, but too short to fit through the hub and
center in the drum. Looks like I need a 3/8" shank(?). Anyone know
off-hand the part-number or size I should look for?
