[Amc-list] Engine Interchange, 58 Rambler American

Yeah, factory Jeep parts, but with a blown 4 cyl I'd still move to the 700 based trans.
Not so much for anything other then the low first gear to get it rolling and up on boost quick.
The AW4 does not have the torque multiplication and low gear of the 700 series trans.
You'll not get the AW4 to shift as hard as a built 700 either. Nor will you get the backing of the after market the 700 has.
Believe me I stay AMC when possible, but in this instance I'd move to the 700R4 or 4L60E.

Are they planning to run quicker than 9.99 in the quarter mile in this '58 Rambler ?

Even the STUDEBAKER boys gripe about the 700 series as Torque Sucking
Lumps - better in parts
availability than the stock item - yet still a disappointment's.

Correct Turbo Sizing will put your Boost where you want it - but on Pump
Gas you'll safely see
it start around 2500RPM - by which time the Aisin 2wd 4speed first gear has
the street car up to speed - *depending upon final drive ratio.

Turbo 4cylinder engines show their power in upper RPM ranges - take a
look at
any of the Nippon Factory Turbo 4s or the Mercedes or VW...sporting
Electronics.

You're not going to get low end Torque enhancement using
a 4 with Boost - make it with cam then add some Boost in the RPM -
with a Methanol Injection System.

You don't have 6 - 8 - 10 cylinders making Torque while waiting for Boost -
it's Tricky getting a Turbo 4 drivable.

As for lack of Performance Support - IPT has a Forum run by John. I
suggest you bat the
breeze with him after viewing the TOYOTA section the Site.

The Aisin platform is run behind the Toyota Supra Turbo & Twin Turbo
cars running these
STOCK up to 450HP - after which they ship them to IPT for *Tweaks* -
allowing 600HP runs.

The BUICK Grand National boys dump the 700 series in favor of the
lighter faster version -
the 200-4R - here's a 'Quick Quote from 'TURBO BUICK . COM' referencing
swapping a 700r in
place of a 200-4r:

the 700 trans fits perfectly, the problem becomes holding it to the
motor. The bolt-pattern is different. If its not, then its either a
one-off 700 or its not one at all. I would recommend against it anyways,
the 700's lower first gear might be amusing at first, but the large skip
into 2nd makes it slower than a 200-4r also consider that the 700r4 has
a .7 OD whereas the 200-4r has .67 not a huge amount but gas is
expensive enough... The work and fab required probably don't make up for
the margin able strength upgrade. just my .$02
PS: the 4l60e is an electronicaslly controlled 700r4, the 4l80e is much
stronger and is basically a th400 with an overdrive, and electronically
controlled. both having Chevy bolt pasterns.

Bottom Line:

Use the 700r for Marine Aquatic Housing.

Find a 2wd AW JEEP trans & run it until it drops.

Then send it to John @ IPT & run it until hell freezes over.
