Re: [Amc-list] Transmission gear replacement...

The T-96 was widely used in the late 40s, through the 50s, and into the early 60s. Do you think they'd have continued making it so long if it was an inherently "bad" design? The only people who complain learned to drive from about the early 60s on, when all but a few hold-out trannys (like the T-96, used only in the lowest price cars and some flat head four Jeeps) had full synchronization. Someone had been down-shifting the T-96 you have into first while moving... something that shouldn't be done with one of those over 5 mph (maybe 10, but...). It grinds a little when I put it in first (while coming up to a stop), so just shove it in, must be a "bad" transmission...

Tom, while the trans is out and apart I'd replace everything within reason, meaning everything you can get at a reasonable price. The cluster gear is probably fine, as Mark said, but it would cost more to replace later than now. If you plan on keeping the thing a long time, it's best to replace it if available and cost is reasonable. Bearings too!

You mentioned the brass rings -- they don't usually wear much until the pop-up "dogs" are worn or gone. I believe you already said they were intact. I cracked one of the rings in mine, but that was behind the 4.6L. The synchros went after a few weeks of driving, so I double clutched for about six months. Was on a trip to a friends house when the ring cracked, lo9cking the trans in second. Luckily it was second and not third, and I was only a few miles from said friend's house! We pulled the trans (T-96 w/OD), popped the top, saw what was wrong, then popped the input shaft out and pulled the brass rings. I was a little fearful it may need them for spacing, but it all went together and ran fine.

So my first gear is bad, I'll get a new one. But the cluster
gear looks OK; there's definite wear on the leading edges of
first's mate, and a couple of nicks inward (probably from the
broken teeth).

Is it a bad idea to NOT replace the cluster gear? $$$/Rambler
Mentality question...
