Both are unfortunately non-magnetic.
Hardness. On the inside where no one can see, scratch it with a piece of
copper. If it scratches, it's aluminum. If it doesn't, it's stainless. Rub
it with steel wool; aluminum will dull, stainless will shine.
Aluminum is whitish and soft; '63 Classic headlamp doors are aluminum. 63
American headlight trim rings are stainless.
Stainless is darker, and very hard. If you whack it with the blade of a 6"
screwdriver it won't dent. Aluminum will.
Aluminum oxidizes, and sometimes gets a whitish growth that looks like
dried toothpaste. Stainless... stains :-)
