magnets don't work on good quality stainless or for that matter of course, aluminum. The nickel content in stainless defeats the magnetic check. I would guess the appearance of the item is going to tell you which it is. Stainless should be somewhat brighter underneath the dirt. Try water and a rag to wipe off the accumulations. I've never seen bright (silver) anodized aluminum, so that should show you the difference. Hope this helps......
