Re: [Amc-list] m8 transmission

Dave,

I'm not an expert but I read through the diagnositics
for both the Classic series and the Ambo (80 series)
automatics in the 1962 manual. As Tom J. has
mentioned in the past, this is a very complete version
of the service manual for the early sixties cars.

It seems that you may have a maladjusted mechanical
shift linkage. There are techniques in the manual for
properly adjusting the manual linkage.

I think the key is that when you but the car in
"neutral" it remains in D1.

The manual also mentions the condition "locks up in
reverse position:

Correction

Front clutch applied; correction, Check clutch for
mechanical failure or:

Front Band applied; correction, Check band and servo
for mechanical failure or clean control valve
assembly.

In short, I have lost track of which car you are
talking about (1965 Classic or 1961 or 62 Classic) but
there I think you can find some diagnostic techniques
and corrective actions in the TSM.
