I never meant to infer the old cast iron toplaoder is the same as an SR4.
SR4's are marginal at best for their intented use.
I would not use an SR4 for anything other then a "lets see how far the parts scatter"! application!!!

My topladers were all old sixties pieces, small block itmes used behind Ford smallblocks.
Even back then when they were "cheap" I couldn't aford the big spline units on my budget.
I did beat on them merclessly though! 
The first one would lock in secodn gear and I'd have to get out and crawl under the car and beat it in to neutral with a hammer! So I rebuilt it on that picnic table. My dad said, that'll never work again, It did and all I did was put new brass in it and replace all the shifter bushings on  Hurst shifter.
  I know I priced second gear and 1-2 syncro, but couldn't afford it. So I filed and cleaned it up and put it back in the way it was!
