Is the car THAT bad??? I don't think it would have got the criticism it received here on the list if it hadn't been for the write-up. If it had been advertised as a solid project car that still needed lots of work -- well, that would be the truth of the matter! But to advertise it as a "restored" car is stupidity. I don't see "everything else is done" except recovering the back seat either. The mis-match of colors is atrocious! Yellow car, tan dash, tan/creme door panels, BLUE seats??? It's far from "ready to go", although it does sound like it is mechanically. As far as panel alignment not being really good... well, it is a 33 year old car. Panel alignment on these things wasn't perfect coming out of the factory.

To me it looks like it would make a decent driver with a bit more work. If the mechanical rebuilds can be supported with receipts, it should be worth the asking price of $2100. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me, but maybe I'm a bit too forgiving?

Has anyone looked at this Gremlin! WOW, someone buy that man some masking tape!
It brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, "Let no panel remain untouched" !
There does not appear to be one aligned or properly prepped and cleaned area on this entire car. Don't foegt to check out the
snazzy blue seats and the cool racing accents on the quarter panels!
I kept flipping thru the pages of pictures expecting some redeeming quality to
come to light, Alas Babylon, None appeared. :[

If anyone finds something let me know! I'd like to find a pre-bent head pipe for my J-10 (83 six cylinder). Or maybe I need an XJ Cherokee head pipe? Mine was 2WD -- do the 4x4 XJs run the exhaust over to the passenger side by crossing under the trans like the big Jeeps do? I plan on using a 4.0L exhaust manifold when I change the manifold gasket this spring.

Anyone seen this beauty? Item # 250062794854. I saved photos just to have them! This is an extremely nice car!! Definitely offsets the Gremlin noted earlier, and currently going for just a little over twice the price! This car should go for a LOT more than it is now, I expect the reserve is near the $10K range. At least it should be.

This is mine: http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=20971

I believe its from a 2001. XJ's have their exhaust on the passenger side.

I also have a set of new-in-the-box 3+3 CJ 258 headers that may do the job in a J-truck's spacious engine compartment here:

Yeah, as homely as it is none of it looks undoable. Even crap
paint protects against rust (if it's not sealin it in :-)

WOW! That is super-nice. A subtle combination of little things
that would make that a totally pleasant car.

Man that thing looks like it was really well cared for for a
long time. Total bargain!

Maybe I have lived out here in the South West too long as I have not see
pre-bent exhaust system parts for sale for over 30 years. If there is a
muffler shop, and there are lots of them the pipes are bent to fit when
you have them installed. Now having said that I can't tell you where the
closest chain muffler shop is such as Midas or Monroe or the equivalent.
I have not seen or taken notice of one in years.
The down side to having things bent to fit is the material is mild steel
and I am sure will not last long if subjected to areas that rust,
however here, they last forever negating the need for having much
pre-bent stuff in stock.
My last AZ restoration was a 1980 Spirit which still had the OEM factory
exhaust system on it, in fact I re-used the head pipe. That catalytic
converter went to replace the rusted out one on the 1980 AMX which came
out of Canada as did the down stream smog air tube, check valve and
hardware. I no longer needed it on my '80 Spirit.
I used a high flow aftermarket catalytic converter and a generic 16 inch
glass pack muffler on the Spirit. (Also a modern version of what used to
be referred to as an "Echo Can")
I would be surprised to see bend up exhaust pipe shops in the rust belt,
but in the south east I guess it kind of surprises me that do not seem
to exist.
Merry Christmas
John

Yes, I noticed that car also. It is one I would love to own.
If it is an original southwest car it has spent a lot of time indoors!
The carpet and interior look mint. They are usually roasted in that era car.
It would be a great car to flyout and drive home! You could pretend you were back in the 80's easy in that car!

All the XJ's crossed over to passenger side.
It and the matching leadpipe should be darned near bolt in to the J series.
Notice I said "should"!!!
The one header that keeps popping up on eBay looks like it may be nice compact piece too! I know the description is a little vague, but it is usually listed under $200 and is supposed to be stainless, Someone over at the amcforums has a pic up of one on a six.

I see these advertised all the time, you plug into your lighter and it
charges the battery and starts the car. What a marvelous concept. With my
luck I would plug it into one of my AMC's and it would fry resistors and
fusible links would go glying thru the fenders and firewalls.

The first problem with our cars is most of them only connect that circuit with the key on. If you have a lighter that is hot always and the charging unit is properly built to not send too many amps thru the small wire feeding the lighter then yes these will work. It will take a while though! A lot longer than a normal jumpstart. If your battery has shorted, forget it.
I personally just carry a good heavy set of jumpers in EVERY vehicle I own, Uh except now that I think about it the American still needs a set! It's a very rare occurance to not be around someone else with a car nowadays when yours dies! The cables are usually the missing link.
