Also the various projects on metal grilles, replacement panels etc. SAVE AMC! Hand craft it if we have to. Values will rise accordingly as the brand becomes known for the quality of its ownership. Don't let my techno-crap discourage you. Use such information to figure out how it CAN BE done at home or in a small shop. mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have no problem at all with running a metal grill on my AMX, I wish AMC had done that ib the beginning. The car is a runner, not a trailor queen, and the factory grill looks ok until you see it vibrating. I have poly motor and tranny mounts so that does nothing for the idle quality, then add a lumpy cam to the mixture. The last time i looked it only had two bad spots so it for sure is getting worse, I don't think they fuse together by themselves.....Russ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I got the new drums from Rockauto.com this week. One was made in Canada and the other did not have Canada cast into it, so I assume U.S. Who knows any more? They were both nearly identical to the 77 Gremlin drums I'm throwing away, except for no bolt holes to hold the drum on the hub. Don't need those anyway. They were both Raybestos drums. There was a speed nut on one lug when I took the wheels off, to replace the previous bolts anyway. When I compared the new Raybestos shoes to the old shoes I noticed that both shoes have friction material the same length down the shoe. The old shoes have a shorter length of lining on the primary shoe. I took the shoes back to Kragens where I got them and the counter lady, who has been there awhile said Raybestos was doing that commonly now, making the linings equal on both the primary and secondary shoes. She checked the part number and it was correct for a 77 Gremlin. I hope this doesn't adversely affect the braking. Seems like more lining material in the same size drum would be a good thing, but what do I know? I cleaned the drums with brake cleaner and gave the outside of both drums a light coat of heat resistant flat black paint. I'm off to the parts store to get more brake cleaner now and finish the job. You made a big project out of a simple 20 miniute lug repacment repair, even if you didn't own an electric or air impact wrench. I hope you did put all new rubber brake hoses on the front and rear as all your excessive work and money will be for naughtt when a 25-35 year old hose blows and you have NO BRAKES!!!!!. Mine was simpe advice to a hobbiest from a profesional mechanic of over 40 years of AMC and brand "X" experience. Do what you want to do it is your car. My cars are safe and repaired properly for the 33+ year old cars they are. Are yours? I'm not mad, just a little surprised at your reaction. I really hadn't considered replacing the axle seals and checking the bearings. I did inspect the rear axles for leakage. I really didn't think it would be a good idea to swage the lug into the hub by pulling on it with a nut. Seems like I read an article somewhere where that was not recommended. I do have the new front brake hoses and they will go on soon. I haven't bought the new rear brake hose yet. There is an article by a guy named Dave Hill in that issue about 5000 dollar rides to fix up. They mention AMC's a couple of times and totally screwed it up. Bad writing, and bad editing. We need to let them know that this must not stand. Spread the word, post it on any forums of which you are a member, including the Jeep places and any normal "hot rod" places or Mopar ones. I will do so here, and on the Eagle's Nest. Here is what I wrote to the editor of Super Rod, on their site at http://www.superrod.com ----------------------------------------------------------->- Editor: I read with some considerable dismay the article on the 5000 dollar cars. I find it inexcusable for any car guy, and especially any car magazine editor, to misidentify a 1961-63 Rambler American convertible as a "1961 Studebaker Lark". This does an injustice to both brands, both of which never receive any kind of respect anyway by the car hobbies at large. I was also not thrilled by the "Gremlin" which appeared to be heavily modified with 1960's Dodge Dart sheet metal. There were two other misidentified cars on that same page. I believe that the "Nash" in one picture is actually a Hudson Terraplane. I am in the process of establishing an American Motors museum. I run into this all the time. You remember American Motors Corporation? They used to build cars in the United States, of all places. At least you correctly identified the Willys in the feature story(You can probably thank the owner for that). I'm glad I noticed this in the store, so I could put it back on the shelf and buy a magazine by someone who knows what they are doing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> I encourage anyone who gives a rat's patootie about AMC cars, or decent automotive journalism for that matter, to respond with force, but politely. No name-calling, simply point out the absolute lameness of this situation. mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
