You can buy the reinforcement plates from any aftermarket belt place. I suggest using them as they are easy to use and give that extra bit of strength even with the heavy floors in th eearly cars. I forget what engine you are going with, but the amc-15 will hold up well to normal use and the occasional brunout. My EFI 4.0L T-5 and 255/60/15"s haven't broken mine [yet]! T-5 shifter location, if staying with a bench, get a S-10 tailshaft housing and top cover with rods. It wil clear the bench easy and you can goosneck bend the shifter to clear the dash -- Mark Price markprice242ATadelphia.net Morgantown, WV ---- d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: > i am NOT going with a ford 8.8. i been told the 8.8 disk brake kit will fit the amc 20 bolt pattern on the output flange of the axle tube. if not, i will be able to fabricate it to fit. you say the m15 will work, i will leave it in for now, get rid of the torque tube, and have me a m20 standing by for when the 15 goes. > > i was thinking i might have to go with some bending on shifter again with a t-5. my steering shifter took a crap on me a few years ago, so i got a hurst truck 3 speed floor shift kit and put it in, mounted on the left side of the trans tunnel. had to take a torch to it and give it a few degrees bend back a little to clear the dash. the shift pattern is bass ackwards, but kinda cool that way. when in 3rd, it wouldnt go in if the seat had to be slid forward much more than where im comfortable. works well tho for now. > > another issue i forgot to mension. seatbelts. the car never had any in it. is the floor pan strong enough in these cars to run bolt thru with about a 2-3" washer on the bottom side to keep from pulling thru to easy? doesnt bother me much ridin without them, but the wife, she is paranoid about it ya know? im content to go with just some lap belts with chrome latches. > > dave stohler > camp taji iraq > > > --------------------------------- > Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. No more shaking engine at idle, no more stalling at stops, and top speeds in excess of 70mph! I bet this will improve my disappointing 31mpg highway too. I was always amazed at how much the engine shook at idle, but not having been around in 1959, I maybe assumed that's just the way things were back then. Not true! The valves should be set to .015", but some had no clearance at all! Preload even. This is all after I carefully rebuilt the carb and distributor too. The lesson here, if it feels like there's something wrong, there is. Things should be noticeably good. In other news, I got my 30 day notice. The housing market has peaked so the owners of the place I'm in are selling before the crash so I have to find a new place. Any Los Angeles area listers with ideas or leads, let me know. A two car garage with just about any living space attached or nearby is what I'm seeking, or a small industrial space that could be filled with Ramblers. Thinking westside. I've been pondering using this crisis as a excuse to get rid of all my (4) cars and parts and do something else with my spare time: advance my career? have more adventures? figure out what other people do who don't have this particular automotive issue? It's the old question of would you give up all that you have if it meant getting instead everything you've ever wanted? Of course there's no guarantee of that. Hmm. Or do I find a new place with the car hobby as the priority? If anyone with a column shift sixties or so AMC can describe the retaining clips or send me a picture that would be great. Frank, sorry, your were probably thinking of the lower shift arm joints which are held together with cotter pins and washers. The upper arm connecters are flanged and are not drilled for cotter pins. I am using hair pins now, but the shift linkage seems too tight. Other news: I still have not experienced the low oil pressure problem and am keeping my fingers crossed that it was a transient problem which was solved somehow. I know about the head bolt modification allowing increased oil flow to the rocker shaft, but I thought I would try flushing the engine first and it seems to have worked. I did use engine flush in the engine and have completely drained the flushing oil and have refilled with 10W40 and a new filter. Still 50 pounds at idle with cold oil. Other news: I have purchased a 63 Classic 770 wagon in the Nevada desert and will be picking it up next month. It has the 196 aluminum block engine and I'm interested in trying to get it running. At the same location I purchased a 64 Classic 660 wagon which I will bring home and part out. If anyone needs 63/64 Rambler parts let me know. I have also seen gold, and even black. I will dig through my old computer and see if I can find any customers cars that were plum. I think I might only have one and that was with a white stripe. I think it is white but would like to confirm. Any pictures of a fresh plum AMX with white stripe and 1 with black stripe.
