Make sure there's a good ground strap from the engine block to the body also. On most AMCs this is from an engine mount bolt to the crossmember, but can be on any engine/body bolt. Should be at least the same size as the battery ground cable, but can be an uninsulated woven strap. Some people have run the dash ground wire to the block to solve problems -- this is usually due to a bad or marginal engine/body ground. Even the older cars sometimes benefit from this due to corrosion in dash to body joints or more likely a marginal/bad engine/body ground cable/strap.
