I had a problem with this on my 68 American and the problems ranged from no dash lights to fuel and temp gauge reading at the high end of their range when the headlights were on. As an aside, you did check to see if the alternator was acting normally with something other than the gauges in your dash, correct? Besides being inaccurate from the start, they could also be bad.
