Re: [AMC-List] Weird charging system problems

My first thought was the regulator, but you replaced it. The most common
problem is one or more of the isolation diodes going bad. There are six
in some models. Check out the following links for checking/repair info.
The last link has the original wiring diagram as well as info on
replacing with a Delco SI alternator with internal regulator. You don't
need a "one wire" alternator -- it's easy to make ANY Delco internally
regulated alternator a "one wire" if desired.

The important thing is to make sure the pulley lines up with the others
or it will throw or quickly wear out the belt. You'll have to modify the
bracket (or the alternator body) because the portion of the alternator
that goes in the bracket is wider on the Delco than the Moto -- usually
twice the width. If you want to retain close to stock appearance, cut
the external regulator wires and tape them to the alternator wiring.
Don't connect them to anything, just wrap the two harnesses together
with electrical tape. The alternator body is different, but since it's
usually mounted low on the engine most people won't notice. You can just
leave the old wiring alone -- the alternator just charges the battery,
nothing but the idiot light should be connected to it.

The Jeep (CJ3B) link is very useful for anyone considering the
alternator swap, and also has links to an engine conversion manual that
will help when considering engine swaps.

The last link, amccf, has a break down of the Moto alternator and a
wiring diagram for a 70 Gremlin (page 1 of 3) that has the standard AMC
wiring for the Moto alternator. Hope all this helps!
