Jim,
I put one of the PowerMaster alternators in my American last summer at
Kenosha. It's a 100 amp unit (they also make a 140 amp one). It was pricey
at about $210 but since I already had a Delco alternator in the car, it
dropped right in. These alternators use modified 10si cases that are
machined to drop right into the Motorola style bracket. These alternators
are slightly bigger than a real Delco 10si which caused it to hit my power
steering gear before the belt was completely tight (it was good enough for
me to drive home on). I ended up using a half inch shorter belt to fix the
clearance issue. This probably isn't going to be a problem on a bigger car.
Kennedy also carries a retrofit kit for about $70 that has the bracket and
wiring adapter to replace yours with a regular Delco 10si (if you go for a
rebuilt, try to get one that's rebuilt by Delco, I've had lots of problems
with the cheaper ones that places like AutoZone carry and so far the one
Delco did is going strong in my El Camino).

On my stock '67 Rebel Wagon 232 I am upgrading to AC as I've posted here
before. I wanted to also upgrade the charging system from the stock 35
amp to something better, probably 60 amp. I have a spare stock alternator
that came with the car (I believe it's the original, but not sure) and had
planned to just take it to an auto electrice shop here in town for
rebuilding/upgrade.
My question is about the voltage regulator. The stock Motorola is on it
now, and I have no reason to suspect it's not OK, but still, I'd like to
go ahead and replace both the alt and VR at the same time for reliability
(I will be driving this car to Atlanta this summer). Any suggestions to
what regulator available aftermarket that's the best buy (not the
cheapest, but the best buy)? I don't care about strict originality as
much as reliability. I can always keep the stock one and put it back on
for a show if I'm worried about it, although that Sanden AC compressor
will pretty much shoot the originality issue in the foot...
Thanks,
Jim Boone
