Goodmorning everyone,

It has been a while since I put my two cents worth in.
I too take a lot of joking about my Gremlin. I love it.
I think I own the only one in my home town. People turn
around and look at you when you drive down the street.
Plus I have antique plates and that draws attention. Mine
is not in perfect shape but it sure runs great. A few rust
spots that I cannot seem to get fixed. When I took it to one
place to have it fixed he said he would not work on my piece
Of junk. Needless to say I was not happy with that remark. 
Therefore it has not been repaired. To bad I do not live closer
to all of you guys who seem to enjoy repairing Gremlins. Oh well
I am only an 82 year old grandma who dearly loves her car. It only
has 89,650 miles and it is 27 years old so what can you expect.
It is my pride and joy and it gets me where I want to go and that
is all that I ask of it. Enjoy all the flack you get-- they are only
Jealous that they do not own one. Happy motoring.

While I don't think you will every retire on the money you make by
selling your Gremlin. It does have a lot of good points. You will be
noticed when your driving down the highway. When I go to car shows I
never have to worry about getting into the wrong car like so many of the
other owners of other "classic" car owners do. How many red 65 Mustangs
were made anyway. I love the idea I can go to a car show and have
corvette, street rods, ect park next to me and I have never heard anyone
ask me what I was doing at the car show. I love the idea that I am the
only one there. So while you won't get rich off the profits of your
Gremlin think of it this way. What other car can you get for less than
$3,000 that is fun to drive, will get you noticed when your driving down
the street, will start a conversation almost every time you stop, can
take to car shows, and will out run half the new cars the road with the
V8 and not do bad with the 6. Think about it. Not much difference than
that $30,000 street rod parked next to at the next car show and your a
lot richer. Terry

Your right. I've taken a lot of "barbs" becuase I've owned a Gremlin. I
get 
comments like" well I can understand if it were a Vette or a Jag...but a

Gremlin. Unless you've owned one you wouldn't understand. 

I have owned three. The two I no longer owned I used to haul firewood
out of 
the woods untill they wouldn't run any more. I could load them up with
so much 
heavy green oak that there was barely a place to sit and drive the car.
I 
would set the idle "higher " on the carb and I would be able drive over
hilly 
paths without even hitting the gas. 

I know I've reacted harshly over the last bunch of e mails in regard to
the 
value of the cars. I apologize to everyone. In my defence, I just had a
hard 
time accepting the trash talk about Gremlins coming from "AMC'ers and
fellow 
Gremlin owners. I'm not trying to get rich off the car, but I don't want
to give 
it away either.

Cool! now I know more about the swing out windows. Thanks for posting. 
Perhaps I will just put the swing outs I have out of my junk '76 Into my
good  
'76. I want my '73 Grem to be as original as she can be, I don't want
to put 
something on her that dosen't belong there. She has a lot of rare
options so I 
want to restore her back to perfection...or at least as close as I can
get for a 
back yard mechanic using an old barn for a garage. :)
As far as other peoples discussions about Gremlin value, I say right on
Terry!
Who cares what they are worth as long as you like the car and enjoy
driving it.
On the flip side of that, I would pay a lot for a real nice Gremlin,
er... that is if I 
had the $$ to do so. I would love to have that little two seater, but I
have other 
Gremmies that need me. I think personally people get hung up on the
whole 
classic thing. I'd much rather have something that no one else has.
It's also 
much more fun, when you find one or find a part for one it's so exciting

because there are not many around. I wouldn't be suprised if that one
day 
these guys with there Mustangs and '57 Chevs figure out what has been 
going on unnoticed all this time and then start wanting Gremlins, Then
I'll 
have to find something else abscure to collect. tee hee! After all
everyone 
was junking the little Nash Metropolitans back in the '70's then all of
a sudden 
they became very popular. Now try and get one reasonable. I think the
same 
thing happened with the little Nash Ramblers on a smaller scale. I
think in a 
small way the Grems are starting to make an impression. I see em on 
commercials, TV shows, and an occasional one on the big screen. As far
as I 
am concerned they have all ready made it to classicdom. :)

Kevin,

I agree with you. I have been telling "nae sayers" for years the time of
the 
Gremlin is going to happen someday. The cars are incredibly strong and
yes 
they are cool. Its just "trendy" to jump on the idiot band wagon to
knock them. 
Especially if the person hops into a Pontiac Aztek afterword.

I also think the disdane for Gremlins is what makes it a "in your face"
car. 
I have been amazed at the gall some people have when they hear you have
a 
Gremlin and scoff. It is a "Lemming" reaction if you ask me. I also tend
to judge 
them as people who can only drive cars that are "acceptable" to other
people. 
Sounds to me like they never got a handle on the peer pressure aspect of
life. 


The advantage to owning a Gremlin is its like owning a "personality 
detecter." If people walk up to it an treat you with respect its a
pretty good 
indication they have their heads "screwed on " correctly. If they
sidestep social 
courtesy and start to insult your choice in life, it usually means your
dealing 
with a person who is a jerk. Its nice to have a machine that helps you
sort out 
the good people from the jerks, and its all done automatically. You can
stand 
next to it and it just happens by itself! You don't have to plug it in
or 
recharge it and there is no limit to how many people it sorts out. What
a 
marvelous machine. A jerk "sorter outer." And we thought they were just
cars!!!!!!

I would like to thank you for the pics you sent me of your car a couple
of
weeks ago. I still have some interest and your asking price is not
really
the issue, but back to that later.
Your post asked for comments, so here are some from a guy who has been
involved in the lower end (no $40,000 '57 Chevy convertibles for this
old
car nut) of the old car hobby since before there even was a Gremlin.
Most of
my old cars have been worth a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. My
first old car was a 1953 Buick woody bought in 1966 (for FORTY
dollars!!!)
Of course I wish I still had it. In the first week of April 1970 I
bought
the very first Gremlin sold in Lincoln, Nebraska--my home town.

In the mid nineties, after many years of acquiring cars (because they
seemed
like a good deal or just because I wanted them) my double lot started
looking like little appalachia with about ten cars--and most didn't run.
The
neighbors didn't like it, the cops didn't like it, but most of all my
wife
didn't like it. I always said that I would restore them "some day" but
my
wife said "Hell no, all you ever do with your old cars is STORE
them--there
is no RESTORE involved." And she was right. I hadn't done any
significant
amount of car work for six or seven years--all I did was let them follow
me
home. Even my dad (who loves cars) said that I might just as well nail
hundred dollar bills to the inside of the garage as keep buying non
running
(or barely running) cars to sit in the back yard. And he was right. The
upshot of all this is that on Jan 1, 1997 I bought my wife a new Dodge
Caravan, and I made a new year's resolution (and a promise to my wife)
that
I would not buy any more cars that I could not get in, turn the key,
start
it, and drive it home. Since then I have sold three Corvairs, a
Cadillac,
two Volkswagens, and a 1952 Pontiac Sedan Delivery. I have put my Morris
Minor, 1986 Dodge convertible, and 1953 Chevy BelAir into reliable,
licensed, insured, running condition. I enjoy driving them. I have since
bought a 1981 Eagle SX4 (off eBay in Oklahoma city) a 1984 Eagle wagon
(in
San diego) and a 1972 Gremlin (in Sacramento) AND DRIVEN ALL OF THEM
HOME!!
(I did have to buy tires for the SX4) I have absolutely no regrets about
the
promise I made. I think that at this point I could have a "slip" and be
forgiven, but I'm not sure I want to go back to that. I have to think
very
seriously about my promise.
  
As far as values go, a car that does not run and drive is ALWAYS worth
significantly less than the same car in driveable condition. A half
finished, unfinished, nearly finished, (whatever) work in progress just
raises too many questions in the buyers mind. A rebuilt engine that's
never
been started, (not even a starter on the car to turn it over) really
scares
me. If the car is so close why don't you get it running and driving? It
will
not only be worth MORE MONEY but will be much, much, EASIER to sell at
whatever price.

Questions---
1--What is the basic body color?
2--1970 Gremlins came with 13" wheels, do you have the original 13"
wheels?
3--Is the engine a 199 or a 232 ?
4--Floor shift or column shift?
5--Is the interior intact and complete, and what color?
6--Do you have a 1970 AMC Technical (shop) Manual with the car?
7--Do you have organized documentation (receipts) for what has been
done/spent on the car, like machine shop bills for the motor work, etc?
8-By when do you need to sell it? I'll be driving past Chicago in early
October.

Still interested at ~~$2000 (or maybe even more) in a running, driving
car.
Sorry to be such a "Rambler" but I guess that's an AMC characteristic.

The markets for the two are not comparable because nationally there
are
millions of people looking for cheap transportation (the rusty Honda)
compared to a few thousand people (at most )interested in old AMC cars,

maybe only a few hundred willing to buy one that doesn't run.

I like AMC cars because they are different, interesting, and
affordable. I like the underdog and "David vs. Goliath aspect too, but

never call them the best. Not even close. I like them anyway.

A seller can set the ASKING price at whatever he wants based on
the
criteria of his choosing, but the actual sale price is always determined
by
the willing and able buyer. I have outright given away a couple of cars
and
also sold several for much less than I had "invested" (generally the
wrong
word to use when talking about money spent on a car) when I needed the
space, or the money, or my automotive interests simply changed. I asked
a
realistic price because I wanted to sell the car, not just try to sell
it.
When someone showed up with cash in hand I sold the car AND THEN I LET
GO OF
IT. Your price is probably realistic, but a non running car is really
just a
well organized collection of parts.

I have never been able to understand why AMC people are so
against
brand X engines in AMC cars. A Gremlin with a Chevy motor is still a
Gremlin. In CORSA (the Corvair club) you are welcome with a Corvair
motor in
anything (like a dune buggy, boat, airplane, motorhome, trike, etc) or a
Corvair body with any motor, and I have seen Corvairs with Chevy v-8s,
Buick
v-6s and 8s, Porsche motors, even a Jaguar V-12 (yes!) and a Subaru flat
4.
The CORSA club is very tolerant and accepting--which is probably why
there
is only one national club instead of several like AMC.

has a 5-speed manual transmission. Will this tranny go into my 1972
Gremlin
258 six, and replace my 3-speed manual without too much trouble? Are
Eagle
trannies somehow different because of the four wheel drive setup?

Steve, Im restoring a 76 and it's a V6 and not an X. An X usually has a
401 or a 304 V8 motor, how r u doing on parts? if u need any I have a

Oh man! did you ever hit the nail on the head.  

The first car show I took my Gremlin to this year, I parked it then 
sat across from the car insead of behind it as always. This way I 
could hear the comments people were making and they didn't know it 
was my car...unless the dorks didn't notice the big Gremlin on the 
front of my T-shirt. Anyway, most people would walk by it and not 
say a word. Some would look at it and kind of giggle, others did like 
it. There was this one jerk in particular who was there with his 
daughter propogating the AMC myths to her. She asked what kind of car 
it was and who made it. This ass told her it was a Gremlin that was 
made by American Motors who made all kinds of stupid looking junky 
cars. He was my 'Dork of the Day' award winner. I started to get up 
when my wife pulled me back down and said to chill. I wasn't going to 
do anything to him, I just wanted to know which car at the show was 
his (I'm sure he was a specatator with a Pontiac Aztek) and find out 
what he really knew about the car and AMC. I was a bit pissed though. 
After about half an afternoon of this garbage, I packed up and left 
before it was over. People are just not ready to accept the Gremlin 
as a 'collector' car. I'm not sure they ever will. I drive mine 
because I enjoy it and like the unique style of the car. I guess 
this guy and the multituldes like him have never really looked at 
some of the style of cars coming out of the orient. Hondas, Hundai's 
etc... they've all made hatchback styles that could be small twins to 
the Gremlin yet they don't bad mouth those cars like they still do 
the Gremlin. To me it just goes to show that the Gremlin's style was 
about 20 years ahead of its time and still might be. Once again, AMC 
was too far advanced for people to handle... even the Eagle was about 
10 years too early before the SUV kick really took hold. I'm tempted 
to get a personal plate for my Eagle that says '1st SUV' if the reg 
fees in this stupid state don't double in Oct like they say they well 
to fixed our FUBAR'd state budget.


In this case the 'jerk sorter outer' worked all day long. I don't 
care. It does not shake my enjoyment of driving a car that is totally 
different than the run of the mill bellybutton car. I've never been 
one to go along with the crowd - I always do what I want to do not 
what happens to be popular at the time.

Oh My!! I finally got it going!! I ordered a new starter and also
replaced 
the cable that goes from the solenoid to the starter!! She started
right up 
and purrs like a kitten!! The guys at the NAPA store said the were
placing 
bets on whether I would get it going or not and whether it was the
starter or 
not!    

NOW the other small problem I have it this.... The vaccum wiper motor..
I 
replaced the tubing and that helped some. I think I am going to take it
apart and 
clean it and see if that helps. I have plenty of vaccum so its not that.
It 
acts like it wants to go but doesnt.... 
I want to clean it first before I replace the wiper motor. Those arent
cheap!

I love vega's!! I have a 1970 AMC Gremlin and a 1979 pinto wagan and a
1980 
pinto wagan.

You should see the look on peoples faces when they see my 1980 pinto
wagan.. 
I spray painted it that dull camo green. Popped all the emblems off of
it. 
Painted the fenders and grill black..
Then I got the emblems off a jeep grand cherokee 4x4. I glued the two 
cherokee emblems on either side in front and the 4x4 emblem on the back
lift gate!!   
People have actually asked me if it was four wheel drive!! OMG.. I
just 
laugh.. 
I am a cherokee indian and that is why I put the cherokee emblems on
it.. It 
is so cute!!

I do love my 1970 Gremlin. I have always wanted one and this is in such
great 
shape. The dashboard is perfect. No cracks, nothing missing, everything 
works, etc. The interior is good. I dont like the red but thats life!!
My gremlin is black with the red stripe and red interior.

I have seen gremlins in restoreable shape on ebay go for alot more than
I 
paid for mine. Mine is in very good shape, especially for a 1970..!!
Mine still 
has the original specs emblem on the firewall and it is perfect and
readable!! 
The guy was asking $1500 for it, which was a great price for a car in
such 
great shape! I noticed that the starter was dragging a bit and the
clutch 
was going out.. I brought up these things and got the car for $1275!!
I 
couldnt believe he went for it... I have put maybe $200 into it with the
clutch 
parts and starter... Some waxing and it is ready for the car show!!

Hi Rebbeca,

I also have a gremlin that has a vacuum wiper motor. ( sounds funny
calling 
it a motor when theres no motor). It has a piece of "corkish" type of
material 
that dries out and looses vacuum. If you take the "unit" apart, you will

notice the inside has a very smooth surface the "cork" piece goes over.
Make sure 
you clean it up and then you will have to find a lubricant that will 
reconstitute the cork without deteriorating it. OOORRRR I saw someone on
the web that 
rebuilds and refurbishes them but I can't recall where. When I went to
the site 
I had the impression like, No Problem , We Fix Em And We Have Plenty In
Stock.
