much appreciated! However, I changed the fuel filter yesterday so
that eliminates the filter as the problem. The previous owner had
installed a manual choke on the carb (the original was electric. The
car ran fine when I got it and drove the 200 miles home and for
several days after that. In the past few days I noticed a slight
hesitation when accelerating even lightly. The problem became
progressively worse. Sometimes I have to wait a minute after it
stalls as it will crank but won't start...then it idles fine again,
goes into drive fine and goes the usual 5mph on its own but try
giving it some gas and it will hesitate, spit and eventuall stall.
There is a carb specialist shop nearby. Gonna go there to see what
they say. Also might try a can of carb spray cleaner. Might be
gummed up in there. I had thought about bad fuel as the car sat
awhile before I bought it but if it was that I don't think it would
have run so well up until now. Going to test something from my
manual...check the accelerator pump with engine not running, air
cleaner removed...tug quickly on the throttle to full open to see if
there are streams of gas evident through the pump discharge nozzle. I
hope there isn't! *LOL*...
