That doesn't surprise me that a lot of Gremlins have the "wrong" gas cap on them. In the 70's it wasn't odd at all to see a Gremlin running around with a rag sticking out of its gas tank where its gas cap had been stolen.

Then someone changed your cap before you got your car. First three years of Gremlins had heavy, cast metal gas caps.

The Gremlin gas cap is from a later model. The correct cap for 1971 would be about an inch wider, much heavier, and a casting instead of a stamping.
