Then someone changed your cap before you got your car. First three years of Gremlins had heavy, cast metal gas caps.

The Gremlin gas cap is from a later model. The correct cap for 1971 would be about an inch wider, much heavier, and a casting instead of a stamping.

This is like the one that I bought brand new in 1970.
I've been looking for this color combo ever since and never seen one for sale. This is probably way too nice for me, since I like a car that I can actually take out and drive, but I may go to the auction anyway.
