Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Re: amc 258-6 backfiring thru carb

I think you can pick them up at the parts stores for about the same price. Actually Advance auto shows the whole distributor for $45 and it looks like that piece comes with it. Could be the problem. If it was me I would try everything before I started into the engine. Of course if we still had Doc with us I know what he would tell you. He tell you to take that stupid electronic distributor out of your car and go find an old one with points in it. An old trick with valves is when you have it running you take a piece of rag and hold it close to your exhaust pipe. When it misses if it sucks the rag into the pipe it is a valve. Thinking about though that might just be for exhaust valves and not intake valves.

I had a 1958 Ford 352 cubic inch police interceptor several years back and a 1979 250 cubic inch inline six that spit thru carb when accelorating and both had lobe rounded off of camshaft. I bet that is what the problem is. Both started with no warning before it started spitting.

Yesterday my wife's 258-6 Eagle started backfiring thru carb. Popping noise. Still runs,
but rough, and pop noise. I am sort of stumped on this and have read a variety of answers
all over place but carb jets appear to be clean, distributor cap fine although will
replace it, have not checked vacuum advance nor timing yet. Any advise appreciated, just
reply here & thanks in advance to all who might reply.
