Paul, considering how long that car sat up, my money would be on the radiator simply being plugged. If and when, you pull out the radiator, and when holding it seems heavier than it should feel, chances are it is plugged up like Packer fan on game day full of brats & cheese. You can look down the radiator at the slits and while they appear open, the stuff settles towards bottom. I may add that I run all my AMCs with NO thermostat.....and also (on the V8s) while all have a 7 blade flex fan, I also put two Hyundai small fans on the radiators, and run all with NO shroud. Some of the 6 bangers like 82 Eagle, have 210,000 miles on them and zero issues. Had heard all the crap in 1980s that pistons would get wallowed out, waterpumps would fail, you name it. On V8s, my 68 Rebel convertible "Machine' has 127,000 miles on it and never gets about 170 degrees unless stuck in Houston traffic. If it gets above 170, then I simply flip the switch and off go the fans and temp back down. The small Hyundai fans you can fit two to a Blackstone radiator, and there is no shortage of piece of shit Hyundais at junkyards, so fans cheap. You can also get the fans locally at auto parts stores or ebay new. While not for everyone, I have never owned a Chevy, Ford, Mopar out of control Toyota, it has been all AMC since driver's license in 1976....that was 365 AMCs ago. And depending on the region you live in and driving habits, your results may differ, but I drive my AMC's daily in Houston you know. Also, good aMC buddy Mike Lakin out in Area 51 is parting out some Hornets if you, or anyone needs anything: http://reno.craigslist.org/pts/1889753114.html http://reno.craigslist.org/pts/1889459639.html http://reno.craigslist.org/pts/1889457463.html Eddie Stakes 713.464.8825 eddiestakes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.planethoustonamx.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pj" <pjtheurer@xxxxxxxxx> To: <BaadAssGremlins@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 2010 11:28 AM Subject: [BaadAssGremlins] Re: Trouble shooting overheating issues Well, I've done ALL these things (shy of replacing the heater core, which i flused on its own thoughroly I DO appreciate the advice, but at this point I'm down to having the rad hot tanked and finding a shroud. I'll do a compression test just for the sake of doing it... Wish me luck! Thank you, Paul J. Theurer R.O.A. Member # 12474 A.M.O.
