Joe - You are correct - l lived in a small community growing up, and it was quite common for the automotive machine shop in the city to come out and put in sleeves, valve seats, and also turn cranks - they had a machine that would turn a rod journal right in the car, as long as you could get the engine high enough to get the pan off. Not sure if it did the mains or not, but I know it did the rods, as we drove Kaisers, and they were notorious for throwing bearings - we had journals turned several times this way.
