Re: [BaadAssGremlins] water pump fit

This reminds me of 5-10 years ago a company was going to reproduce bellhousings for AMC. Everyone was really excited that this new product was going to come into the market as who couldn't use, or want a new bellhousing. Anyways, in their arrogance, or sheer lack of research or just don't know AMC, they made one. Not for the Borg Warnet T-10s AMC used but for Muncie. AMC didn't use Muncie. So Frank Swygert of AIM magazine wrote the company a nice letter asking why they didn't do one for T-10, instead of wasint precious resources on something no AMC used. He got back a email from corporate telling him 'AMC people were lucky we did anything at all for them' which was sort fo par for course. I don't remember the company but with that reply, I can only hope that there is a warehouse somewhere with a million Muncie/AMC bellhousings no one ever bought. And I hope the arrogant son of a bitch who wrote Frank is in the unemployment line. You know same thing happened with the Crown timing chain covers about 8 or so years ago, and granted, sometimes a first run of something has some glitches. That was worked out however quickly, and hopefully no harm done to engines.

For what it is worth, have had both long shaft and short shaft and I mentioned it in original post to Jim who initially asked that question: " Hi Jim, this is problem as old as AMC. There is long shaft and short shaft waterpumps. I even believe there is a memo from decades ago talking about this differences. I don't remember what it said however. Whoever you got that aftermarket waterpump from you might ask what to do. With stock waterpumps I used to use a spacer, which sometimes worked. You might have to use a shim or two. Somewhere on the old amxfile.com website there was a good thread about different ways to solve this, sort of like if you ask how many ways to change a headlight 100 different answers though."

Still looks like jury out!

Good answer Dave -we think alike. I have tried several times to match up pulleys and always wind up changing more and more stuff just to find more things affected. The problem is in the waterpump so go there to fix it.I wish the manufacturers would pay more attention to height of pulley flange -not just close enough but spot on.Rick

Have you thought of pressing the pump hub a bit further down the shaft to get the pulley hub to line up ? I've done this on six cyl pumps where there are variations. 30 seconds on a hydraulic press will fix it.
