Chances are they might not have ever opened the hood. There are a lot of 
people who think a V6 is a straight 6 I assure you! Most is just ignorance 
however from people not familiar with engines or AMC, but as you mentioned 
the paper even said that Mustang had both!

Having BOTH V6 AND straight six in same car reminds me of a cartoon me and 
brother used to bet on as kids who would win the race!
