>From Iowa Eagle: Is your '81 all the time 4WD? If not just don't use the selector for 4WD. If it is the the NP 119 case, all the time 4WD then you will need to pull the front drive shaft while you have the mismatched gears. You may lose fluid out of the transfer case so that is something to consider -- I forget if the yoke is bolted in. If it is you can just leave it there and nothing will drip out -- and just pull the shaft. It has a selector off to left, you have to stop, then pull switch while pushing knob over to go into 4WD. Jay Nogg wrote: you can drop the front drive shaft off. you'll still be hauling around over 100lbs of front diff. - have a machine shop whack the axle stubs leaving the portion that goes thru spindle as this holds the hubs on. then drop the front diff. off. I haul around a extra 100 lbs after I hit some of these Houston buffets, so not problem there. Good idea on the axle stubs, but wonder how many places would know how, or be willing to do somwething like that perhaps. Garry Nordstrom: Eddie: I will be starting on my 79 AMX after I finish the scrambler,,frame off, big project. The AMX front shock tower is in bad shape, so looking for compatible front frame clip to install on AMX. would be nice to score on in the uppper midwest, I have searching around Duluth and nothing, actually most AMC bodies are very hard to find here. Someone just called me yesterday up in your neck of woods, and they found a old junkyard with grumpy fellow near the MN/IA border. He found a 68 Rebel convertible in there and wanted to met me know about the roof frame, as I have been looking for one for 12 years now. Have found some, just either rusty, or high dollar for some reason. Not being cheap, just want the best one I can find and reasonable! He is supposed to go take some photos of the thing. Said there is a number of AMCs in there. If you want I can look for number on my desk here if you think it will help. Someone shuold be able to help with front shock tower however. Maybe this rust free place: http://www.pvilleparts.com/Web%20Pages/Misc%20cars/amc.htm Mark Price: I forgot about the 81 being fulltime! Yeah, it would not work with the front disconnected! Needs to be selectrac to pul the front shaft and drive in 2wd. I'm now confused about what the difference is between full time and select-trac on these. I know some were full time, but again, not a Eagle specialist, just like the darned things and would like to somehow quickly put this 81 Eagle, 151-4banger, 4speed back on road in reasonable amount of time. Seems not a lot were made with 4bangers or 3:54 gears in back. Jim Blair: I can forward your axle request to the Jeep XJ list Thanks Jim and feel free to, the more the merrier, can't believe a number of online sites are actually chiming in on this little Eagle question, but hopefully will figure it out and find the darned axle to get it back on road.
