| On your hooking up the cables backwards: I have done this a few times,
mostly at night. Several things you need to check: 1. pull the alt, take it to Auto Zone or O'Reillys and have them do a free
check of it. There is a chance while new, you toasted the resistor on back when
hooking cables up wrong, takes seconds to waste it. 2. check ALL wires around the solenoid.. The reason I mention this is while
they look good, these usually burn under the sheath at the plug. So if you have
a "L" shaped plug or "P" shaped eyelet going to or from the solenoid, you might
want to pull them off one by one and inspect it. My wife's Concord wagon drove
me nuts after a dumbass hooked cables up wrong on her 78 Concord wago. With
electrical it is trial and error to trace something down. And by chance.....when
I was replacing a solenoid I noticed the "L" shaped plug go limp! And guess
what? It looked perfect with no signs of burns, but I cut it and damned if this
was the problem all along....the wire inside was crispy from REVERSE CURRENT.
Chnaged and no problem ever again. Sadly we sold that stunning 78 Concord wagon
to a fellow in New Orleans, for $2100. I believe it was a victim of Katrina
years later. 3. check your 'fusible links' a shop manual for your year. Sometimes these
also do as they are supposed to...and burn to keep a harness from frying.

PM Subject: Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Eddie, Thanks, I took the tour. That was cool. I pulled a real
good one. I recharged my battery and hook it up backward, Doh!! it smoked my
solenoid. I tested my bain and it was o.k. now I need a new solenoid. I also
tightened my fuse panel screws and my ALT light still stays on. It has
recently been rebuilt so, it can't be the alternator. Any suggestions. Thanks,

If considering repainting it....and want to simply change color while
keeping it gerneally stock for 72 year, consider A2 1971 Canary
Yellow...which was also carried over into 1972. About 5-8 shades
brighter that E9 Mellow Yellow used in 73-74. Here, take a
Gremlin tour on arcticboy's site:http://www.arcticboy.com/Pages/arcticboysgremlin.html PS:
I hear about me a lot too, whihc is good for Texas ego! Not king of
AMCs, not sure who would wear that crown, but can think of a few folks
who probably could fit under it due to their commitment and service to
the old car hobby, whether by volunteering, writing or other. Hell, Bart
could ever wear that crown under the Gremlin file for this informative
site. Good luck with your first car, and being 16, you have a jump
start on a lot of people your age, as you will be learning a trade like
restoration (big business, some shops here in Houston charge $175/hour)
but the best part is the time you and dad will be spending together
doing something fun. There is no $$ figure you can put on that. Eddie
