Subject: AMC Spirit questions Hello Mr Stakes.
Was wondering if you might be able to answers some questions about a
1982 AMC Spirit.
Even if you cannot answer them I do want to thank you for your time.
I bought a 1982 Spirit hatch today...because I had to get rid of my 66
Marlin, and still wanted to drive an AMC.
It's a 258/column auto. It came with a Haynes manual. Was looking thru it,
trying to identify the transmission. All it gave were 2 choices, a 908 and
998.
Would you happen to know how to tell the difference between the two
transmissions?
Can either one of these trannies be beefed up, or should it just be
replaced with a
727?
How difficult is it to install a 290-401 type V8 and applicable trans into
this chassis?
I ask this, because I have no knowledge if the 258 6 cylinder is worth
modifying for more power.
Is there anything that can be done, suspension wise, to improve the
handling? Perhaps some of the older Javelin/AMX suspension pieces might
fit...they did offer stronger springs, bigger sway bars, and those traction
rods, right?
I'm not looking to make a super radical car. Heck, even a 304 with 1hp per
cube would be fine. I don't know if this is even possible, but I'd like to get
the 18-20mpg my old Marlin got, with maybe 300hp. Just a good handling, well
balanced AMC with some poke...kinda like the original AMX's were.
Well, just thought if anyone might have a clue about such things, it would
be you.
Thank you again for your time and consideration.
